Joshua was born with 8 jejunal atresias of the intestines, requiring 2 surgeries ( 1 day old and 13 days old) to repair. He also had a Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction (UPJ) rendering his right kidney useless, and dilated with urine (hydronephrosis). Josh had a tube (nephrostomy) placed into his kidney to help drain the urine at 8 days old. When Josh was a little over 3 months, he had surgery to correct the obstruction. His heart had 2 defects at birth, an Atria Septal Defect (ASD) and Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). He had a PDA ligation at 6 days old to repair. He has currently been discharged by his Cardiologist, with his ASD no longer present! An MRI at 4 days old showed that Josh's brain had smoothing and was well undersized. He was originally diagnosed with a condition called Microlissencephaly. A visit with Dr. Dobyns at the University of Chicago (a specialist in the fields of these types of brain malformations) resulted in a rediagnosis that Joshua has a condition called Microcephaly with simplified gyral pattern (MSG). At birth, Joshua also had poor hearing, his condition clinically is labeled profound sensorineural hearing loss. His vision has also been affected and he has been diagnosed with Cortical Visual Impairment, which essentially means he has poor vision. It's been a long road for the boy! At one point, Josh had 8 tubes coming out of him, and was hooked up to more machines than you can imagine. You can read more on the beginning of our life with Josh in the Prenatal journal. |
